Designing, creating and building a mini game in 48 hours!
I took part in the Global Game Jam 2025 as part of a team with 5 current Games students from Staffordshire University. The theme was ‘bubbles’ and we chose to create a level-based, mini-game (with 8 levels) in Unreal Engine. With a mouse character called Bubble and Squeak (and a colour-blind-friendly colour scheme).
The concept is that the mouse is trying to get home to his ‘cheese house’ whilst avoiding traps and obstacles (including red and yellow bubbles that can kill or block), and using other bubbles (blue and green) to jump or speed up.
As the only artist on the team, I had to create all the 3D and 2D artwork for the game, including the character, 3D assets, UI icons, level select, background, colour scheme and trailer. As we only had 48 hours to complete it, we decided to go for a simple low poly art style which would still be visually effective.
To do this I used:
- Maya and Substance Painter to create the 3D assets.
- Photoshop to create 2D artwork.
- Premiere Pro to create the trailer.
