Created in 4 weeks for a Game Republic/NextGen Skills Academy Bootcamp & Game Republic Event
This is a vertical slice demo of a game that I made as part of a team during the Game Republic and NextGen Skills Academy Bootcamp, over a month, with the aim of demoing it at the first Game Republic event of 2025 in York.
Our concept was to a create a game that would work like a ‘choose your own story’ adventure book with puzzles and challenges and elements of Dungeons and Dragons, set in a cave system that the player/character is exploring. In a full game, this would be expanded to include fighting NPCs, and a variety of different experiences that would simulate a journey.
I was one of 2 artists in a team of 5. My colleague concentrated on creating the landscaping while I made all the assets and props, including a hut and its contents, mushrooms, plants, crystals, lampposts, doors etc. We chose to go for a low poly stylised look that would work for both the game play and timescales, and because it’s a style that both myself and the other artist were comfortable with and enjoy creating.
This game is made in Unreal Engine, and I also used Maya, Substance Painter and Photoshop.
Feedback
20+ industry professionals tried out our demo at the Game Republic event, and the majority enjoyed it and wanted to play further and wanted to know if we would be releasing the full game. However, the majority of comments were about my art style , the look, feel and my attention to detail.
In addition, when we presented it to our Bootcamp cohort they were impressed with how much we’d managed to do in such a short time, and that it already looked and played like a finished game.
